Annunciation Chapel
The Annunciation Chapel was modeled after the Heavenly Temple (it’s the sacred altar where kings in the olden times made offerings to the heaven).
Inside the chapel are 12 pillars representing the 12 apostles (the Heavenly Temple represents the 12 seasons of the year). The outer wall of the chapel was painted red. Red is the Chinese traditional color for buildings. Windows were patterned after Western Europe. On the glasses are pictures of biblical personages which were painted according to the Chinese traditional paper cutting.
The design of the entire chapel was a combination of East and West. The chapel was named Annunciation with the hope that all who comes to pray in this chapel will learn to be like Mary in her attentive listening and total obedience to God’s will.

The chapel in the basement (crypt) is called “St. Stephen Chapel.” This chapel imitated the style of the Roman Catacombs. Its purpose is to remind everyone of a truth that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of our faith.”
St. Stephen is the first martyr of our Church. His constant prayer and his communion with God made it possible for him to sacrifice his life for the sake of his faith at the momentous hour.
The chapel in the basement is named after St. Stephen to remind each of us who prays at this place to understand that following Jesus is not easy, sometimes we need to give up our life for the sake of our faith.
The altar and the seats were made of marbles, giving us a sense of primitive simplicity. The headlight above the altar represents the sun, while the small lamp represents the star, hang between the blue sky and the white cloud, it gives one a feeling of raising one’s head in supplication. At the same time, it also allows us to realize that the suffering church under the guidance and illumination of the cross has hope.
